Stopping Pop-ups from Chrome

Modified on Tue, Aug 31, 2021 at 9:27 AM

Chrome has a feature that allows sites to pop-up important notifications to your desktop.  This is great for notifying you about new email messages, an incoming chat, or a breaking news story.

This is also terrible for when a site pops up advertisements, or worse, messages making it look like your computer is infected with malware:

The nice thing though is that if you look near the bottom of the pop-up, you'll see that it's coming from Google Chrome, so you know it's not real.

To end the annoying pop-ups, copy and paste this address into the address bar of Chrome:

chrome://settings/content/notifications

Scroll down and you should see a section of sites Allowed to send notifications.  You can click on the three dots to the right of each offending site (in this above image it's captchadecode.com) and select either Remove or Block to prevent the site from ever being able to send you a notification again.

What's the difference between Remove and Block?

Remove simply removes that site from being allowed to send you pop-ups.  But if you go to that site again, it can ask you if you want to allow notifications and, if you hit Okay, they'll start all over again.

Block prevents the site from sending you pop-ups just like Remove, but also prevents the site from asking you if you want to allow notifications in the future! In the case of above, it looks like a pretty safe bet that you'll want to block notifications from captchadecode.com.
